Autopilots

Marine Autopilots provide a host of advantages to the helmsman by increased fuel savings, safety at sea and convenience to move around the vessel in light to moderate - winds and currents, with insignificant helm movements. These devices will hold your vessel on a preset compass course, via the CPU or Central Processing Unit, based on direction not speed. They are now widely available for all Trawlers, Powerboats (Inboards, Outboards, or I/O), along with all types of Sailing Vessels.

The three main components of a Marine Autopilot System, for vessels with mechanical steering, are the Fluxgate Compass, CPU or Course Computer and the Drive Unit, which is typically an electric or hydraulic pump that applies force on the vessels rudder(s). The more sophisticated autopilots allow you to integrate the autopilot with your GPS / Chartplotter to allow more precise course adjustments.
