One of the limits to 12 - volt marine electrical systems in larger boats is what we call “voltage drop”. For most boats up to approximately 38 – 40 ft. in length voltage drop is typically not an issue. However, as the length of the vessel increases the size of the DC loads increases proportionately. When you start adding marine components like bow thrusters, inverters, water makers, electric winches, & windlasses it becomes almost impractical to use 12V wiring. Additionally, these marine components typically draw half as many amps at 24 volts versus 12 volts.
