Simply put, a Marine Inverter converts your DC power, from your 12 - volt battery banks, into AC power. This allows you to run household appliances onboard when not connected to shore power. They are considerably less expensive than installing a Genset (generator) onboard, coupled with all the associated costs that go along with maintaining a generator. However, Inverters are only as effective for use, based on the size of your battery banks & their associated amp hour ratings.
Inverters are available in two different type models, which we classify as Modified Sine Wave (MSW) & True Sine Wave (TSW). If you plan on running any type of electronics you will need to stay with the True Sine Wave Inverters, which are a bit more expensive. However, they perform extremely well with sensitive electronics.
Inverters are available with a variety of output power levels, so you’ll need to determine the total number of AC appliances, & the total watts of all combined appliances you plan on running before you can pick the appropriate marine inverter that will meet your AC power requirements onboard. Fixed Mount Inverters are capable of producing much higher watts of output power. They can also be wired directly to your battery banks and can be integrated directly into your AC wiring aboard your boat.
